Downtown Chicago is as safe or safer than most downtown areas because it’s typically packed with pedestrians, even at night. I suppose there might be some dark alleys where you wouldn’t want to walk by yourself at 3 a.m., but that’s true for any big city. There are unsafe areas of Chicago, but none are near downtown.
